In a significant crackdown, officials arrested five individuals, including Akshay Vinubhai Vala, a resident of Gujarat, in connection with smuggling hydroponic weed at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

During a night inspection on 25th December 2024, conducted by officers of AIUC, a passenger identified as Mr. Akash Vinubhaiwala, was intercepted. The passenger, arriving from Bangkok via Thai Lion Air flight SL218, was held under suspicion of carrying contraband items.

Following the protocol under the NDPS Act, 1985, a thorough personal search of Mr. Akash Vinubhaiwala was conducted in the presence of a gazetted officer. Although no contraband was found on his person, attention shifted to his luggage.

The officials inspected a red trolley bag checked in by the suspect. Inside the bag, two smaller bags—one orange and the other multicolored—were discovered. Upon opening the trolley bag in the presence of independent witnesses, officers found five vacuum-sealed transparent packets containing green, dry leafy substances. Upon questioning, the suspect disclosed that the material was hydroponic weed.

The contraband, neatly packed and concealed, was immediately seized by the officers. Further investigation revealed the involvement of four additional individuals, who were subsequently apprehended.

This arrest marks a critical step in disrupting the illegal drug trade and reflects the stringent enforcement of laws under the NDPS Act, 1985. All accused individuals are currently in custody, and further investigations are underway.
